Seven Syrians: War Accounts From Syrian Refugees
by Diego Cupolo
8th House Publishing, Montreal, 2013

The summer of 2013, I volunteered as a teacher in a school for Syrian refugees on the Turkish-Syrian border. During this time, I fostered many relationships with Syrian friends and colleagues who shared with me their experiences of escaping the war in Syria.

"Seven Syrians: War Accounts from Syrian Refugees," is an attempt to present some of those stories to readers who are interested in the Syrian War, but may not be able to learn about it directly from the people who lived it. Each narrative account is written in the first person and is displayed side by side with a portrait of the storyteller along with photographs of their new environments in Turkey. If history is written by the winners, then this is an effort to document the civilian voices that so often go unheard.
